CFIS YouTube Channel "UBC Interdisciplinary"

Background

CFIS has an extensive archive of videos highlighting our researchers and students, as well as visiting speakers.

In May 2007, CFIS launched an informal YouTube channel hosting several of these videos. UBC did not officially condone YouTube videos, and so the channel remained un-promoted.

YouTube is not going away, and in fact is becoming the primary source of information on campuses.

A Q1 2008 survey by eMarketer/YouTrends reported on the top 10 websites that US college students visited (Males/Females): Facebook (60/74%), ESPN (36%) YouTube (28/28%) and and Google (28/28%) were the top four. In July 2008, YouTube reached over 5 billion views (comScore) in the US, representing 44% of the total 11.4 billion views. By Q1 2010, YouTube was the 2nd most visited site (visited by over 40% of male and female college students). Total US views of YouTube reached 9 billion, or 55% of the total.

The rebranding of the university led to a revised and more YouTube-friendly policy at UBC by 2009. At CFIS, by early 2010, our informal and somewhat modest channel had received over 30,000 views.

On March 18, 2010, the formal CFIS YouTube channel, "UBCinterdisciplinary", was launched, and exactly 9 months later, we recorded our 10,000th view  of the the 90 videos we now hae posted.

Why "UBC Interdisciplinary"? The name was chosen given that external audiences we may not know what "CFIS" is, and more importantly, our channel aims to be inclusive, hosting and aggregating videos that describe interdisciplinary research across UBC, not just in CFIS.
